You cannot remove a Google review just because it hurts. But a surprising number of bad reviews violate Google's own rules, and those can come down. The trick is knowing which fights you can win.
The reviews Google will actually remove
- Fake or spam reviews: posted by bots, review farms, or accounts that mass-post identical text.
- Reviews from non-customers: people who never did business with you, including angry strangers from social media pile-ons.
- Competitor reviews: a conflict of interest under Google's rules, if you can connect the reviewer to a rival business.
- Extortion reviews: posted after a demand for a refund, discount, or free work. Documented threats make these strong removal cases.
- Off-topic rants: reviews about politics, your hiring decisions, or something that happened at a different business entirely.
- Harassment and hate: profanity, slurs, threats, or personal attacks on you or your staff.
The reviews Google will not remove
An honest customer who had a bad day with your business, described it accurately, and gave you two stars is not removable, even if you disagree with every word. Do not waste weeks fighting these. Respond professionally once, fix what caused it, and focus on volume so the review sinks.
How to report a review, step by step
- Open your Google Business Profile and find the review.
- Use the three-dot menu and choose to report it.
- Pick the policy violation that actually fits. Choosing the right category matters more than people think.
- Gather your evidence: screenshots, customer records, anything showing the reviewer is fake, a competitor, or making demands.
- If the first report is rejected, appeal. Appeals with new evidence succeed regularly where the first pass failed.
The strategy nobody talks about: bury it
Every removal case has a deadline problem: while you fight, the review sits there. The parallel move is to bury it. Ten fresh reviews from real happy customers push an old bad one below the fold, dilute its rating impact, and show readers it was the exception. Removal and burial are not either-or. Run both.
